In the Rockwood Lane Weekly 25, I mentioned that I recently finished the crocheted Through the Window Afghan, and that I tried to get photos, and was striking out.
My home isn’t good for lighting, or even just pictures in general – it’s not cohesive at all, and short on space so I have a spot set up outside that I use to take photos in natural lighting, but it’s not very big, so it really only works for standing, and not for using with most furniture pieces.
It works a little with this chest I have, and after many attempts, I did get a couple photos I liked, but… look at the colors I picked to wear! I originally planned to try this shoot with the same athleisure style clothing because I wanted to look cozy, but different colors to match my afghan. I hadn’t planned on taking photos this day, but I happened to get home early from an errand, and I had the style on, so I went for it. Cute picture, but pink pants are a no for the colors in my afghan.
It was also 90 degrees out here in Florida when I took this photo! I turned back to my home, and decided it was the best time to work on a corner in my living room. I don’t have before photos, but it was a mess! And just a bunch of wasted space.
The first thing I did was clear everything out of this corner of my living room – moved it somewhere else, put it away, donated it… it just had to go! There was one exception, and that is that we have a floor AC unit in this space. I’ve moved it around, and around, but it’s big, and while it’s not ugly (except for it’s big hose), it itself is an eyesore. For now it stands diagonally in a corner. I’ll tell you how I hid it in a moment.
The black shelf you see is one that I pulled out of my craft room closet, and it’s been sitting in the living room waiting to be placed somewhere. It’s from Ikea, and I just love it! After I decided to work on this corner, I had decided to use this here, and go for a sort of reading nook corner.
With that in mind, I went to Hobby Lobby and Ross hoping to find a few things: a cute accent chair or bench, a blanket ladder, simple, natural wood or galvanized metal accents for the shelf I could keep up year ’round, a side table, and some new curtains and area rug that matched each other. While I found some pieces I liked, I didn’t love anything, and went home empty handed.
I was disappointed, and mentally drained from not having luck, but it worked out for the best! I made a cup of coffee, and looked at my space. Everything I needed was already in the living room.
I moved the shelf into place next to the AC unit. The recliner was in a space that I have other plans for so it would need to be moved anyway. I dragged the recliner across the living room, and placed it in front of the AC unit, moving it forward enough so it could have the foot part up without hitting the AC unit. I moved the lamp from by the couch to the other side of the recliner. Grabbed a side table I had in the kitchen, and put that in front of the lamp – it just all started falling into place!
I went out to Home Goods and Michaels still looking for: a blanket ladder, simple, natural wood or galvanized metal accents for the shelf I could keep up year ’round, and some new curtains and area rug that matched each other, and again, while I found some pieces I liked, I didn’t love anything for the space except the faux plants! Michaels was having a Spring sale so I got all 5 plants 50% off, and they were perfect!
I went back home, and placed the little ones on the shelf with some other items I already had on hand, and the big plant is actually sitting on top of the AC unit, though you would never know!
I am still missing some new curtains, and an area rug, but for now, I’m so pleased with this little corner! It’s still a bit dark so I think I’ll be looking for a lighter color cover for my recliner, and hopefully will find matching curtains and rug that are a similar light shade, but I got some pictures I’m quite happy with for my afghan, and now I actually have a cozy, functional space in my living room perfect for sipping my coffee, and crocheting the days away.

I absolutely love how that afghan turned out! It’s beautiful! It’s nice that there are colors, but they aren’t overpowering!

Thank you so much! I had a lot of fun experimenting with the colors. I’m still trying to find my style and color scheme, not sure what I will try next. Any suggestions?
