Upcycled Tartan Top with Jeans & Booties

December 8, 2021

How to wear a red and black tartan plaid top with jeans and booties.

I purchased this scoop neck tartan long sleeve shirt from SheIn a couple years ago. It is currently sold out, but you could try searching “square neck” or “scoop neck” for something similar.

It’s a festive, pretty print, and the fabric is soft and comfortable but there were two issues for me:

  • 1.) the square neckline (because it’s really not a scoop neck) goes out too far and my bra straps show,
  • 2.) it’s too short – it’s more crop length. I wore the top once (in this photo), and then it’s been sitting in my closet since while I’ve contemplated donating it.

I ended up crocheting around the neck opening to bring it in – you can see how I did that in my Shay Collar post over on my sister blog, EyeLoveKnots.

It was the first time I had done something like this, and it worked out perfectly! What a game changer.

The top is still short, but I just paired it with some high waisted pants. Before, it was too much to have the neckline and length bothering me, but I can work with just one. I was tempted to crochet around here too but after testing the neckline out a little, I am worried it will be too tight, and I won’t be able to get my arms through.

I got my wooden rectangle earrings from ModCloth a couple years ago, and they’re sold out now, but I found some similar ones on Etsy: Wooden Bar Earrings, Flower Earrings, Laser Cut Earrings, Wooden Rectangle Bar Earrings.

I’m rocking my high waisted blue jeans from Wal-Mart that are NoBo brand. These are really great quality jeans. They have outlasted my Old Navy Rockstars, and are really comfortable. My only issue with them is compression – they have none in the front so if you’re like me and have a little belly on you, it is noticeable in person (though you can’t really tell in these photos). I am 5’6″ and 193 pounds wearing the size 13.

I’ve paired this outfit with these almond toe chunky booties I ordered online from SheIn a couple years ago. They are my favorite boots I own. At first, I wasn’t sure how I was going to like the almond toe because I usually don’t like pointed shoes, but these are so comfortable, and stylish. Wish they had a few other colors available. I did find some similar ones on Amazon that are now on my wish list.

I love Shein! They have the cutest clothes but I agree their sizing can be a hit or miss. I do admire that you wear able to add extra to the neckline. Would you consider perhaps adding a similar attachment to the bottom of the shirt to elongate it?

I keep going back to it. When I did the neck opening, it restricted the stretch. It was perfect for this, but I worry it might restrict the body opening too much, and I won’t be able to get my shoulders through. I could always rip it out without damaging the shirt so I may just give it a try. I think I’ll feel a lot more comfortable with it after.

Love the way you resolved the bra problem. I do like a square neck, but know this can happen. The red plaid is very pretty! I have a few tops that are shorter and I wear them with high waisted denim too.

Thank you! Tried my best. I really do love the top, and even more now that it fits the right way. Guess I should take my sister’s advice though, and take a trip to Victoria Secret so they can help me find a good bra to wear with square necks.

You did such a great job adding that cute border to the neckline! it’s a lovely top on you and it’s nice you could make a small modification to make it easier to wear 🙂

Thanks for joining the #WeekdayWearLinkup! Hope that you had a great weekend 🙂 We had a couple fun Christmas gatherings 🙂

Hey! I'm Alexandra, the blogger and creator behind On Rockwood Lane and EyeLoveKnots! My passion is being creative. My favorite thing to do is crochet, and you will almost always find me having a cup of coffee and working on a new crochet project, but when I'm not doing that, you might find me out at a local park rollerblading, baking some fresh cookies, picking veggies in the garden or re-decorating for a new season or holiday. My two cats are great supervisors for all my adventures (minus the being outside because they think it's too hot in Florida to be anywhere but inside), and make sure I take plenty of breaks.

I've been shopping for a noodle bowl with chopstick holder for my niece. I really like this design.

Black OUGES Top (aff link)

When I received this black Ouges brand top in my September Amazon Wardrobe box, I was pretty happy. I have a similar top that I received in an earlier box that is the same brand, and I love the fit of it. I think the raglan style gives me a sort of confidence. I am a 42″ bust wearing the size Medium. There are several other colors available too!

It's lip balm season, and these lip balm holders are excellent! They come on a swivel hook that can be attached anywhere for easy access, and to make sure you don't lost your lip balm at the bottom of your bag. I personally have one of these. The quality is great, and Candace is lovely to work with! PLUS they come in 11 colors!
