WDORL 9: 5 Earth Day DIYs

April 5, 2021

This week’s Earth Day DIY finds include how to upcycle placemats, how to make a paper bead necklace, how to emboss aluminum cans, how to crochet an Earth pillow, and how to turn a quilt into a tote bag.

Earth Day will be here soon! So many great ways to upcycle items or make items that feature our beautiful planet!

In case you missed it, I shared 10 DIY Fairy Garden Wreaths.

A Spring outfit idea!

And last week’s Weekly Dose featured 5 Spring DIYs.

On my EyeLoveKnots blog, you’ll find:

  • C2C Window Pane Square – Free Crochet Pattern
  • And more Spring finds at the Snickerdoodle Create Bake Make Link Party 379!

On to this week’s Earth Day DIYs!

How to Make Personalized Placemats with Maps (Photo Tutorial) from Pillar Box Blue:

I love this idea from Pillar Box Blue! When you end up with placemats you aren’t crazy about, or you’re just tired of, it’s so easy to decoupage them with something more up your alley. Think of the possibilities!

Upcycle Toilet Paper into Paper Beads from Purple Hues and Me:

Friends, who ends up with two or three squares of toilet paper left on the roll at the end? I know I do sometimes. Don’t throw it out! Use this photo tutorial from Purple Hues and Me to turn them into paper beads! Who knew?

Recycled Aluminum Can Butterfly Embellishments (Photo Tutorial) from Crafts Unleashed:

Lately, I have really been thinking about the soda/beer cans we recycle contemplating what I could turn them into. The idea of sharp edges scares me a little, but my husband suggested sand papering the edges down. What a neat idea to emboss them, and paint to match!

Those butterflies could go onto a handmade wreath or sign, turned into a necklace, or change up the image all together, and it could be perfect for any time of year. Hmmm, I am wondering if they could even be used as cupcake toppers?

Crochet Planet Earth Pillow (Free Pattern) from Repeat Crafter Me:

This is a fun alternative to a globe (if the globe is used decoratively). Perfect to celebrate Earth Day of course, but also great for a child’s room that has a space/solar system themed room, or as part of an explore themed room/home.

Retro Patchwork Bedspread Into a Throw and Tote Bag (Inspiration) from Sum of their Stories:

This idea is excellent for a quilt you’ve had sitting at home (like Julie did) or for thrift store finds that you’ve fallen in love with the pattern, but want something a little different in design. I think this as a tote bag is awesome! I would definitely rock that. Other upcycling ideas include placemats, a table runner or a few throw pillows.

I love that tote bag idea! I’ll have to check that out and also find a friend or relative who quilts, lol.

Haha! You might be able to find an unfinished quilt at a local thrift store.

Yes! So many great ideas, and not enough time to do them all.

Hey! I'm Alexandra, the blogger and creator behind On Rockwood Lane and EyeLoveKnots! My passion is being creative. My favorite thing to do is crochet, and you will almost always find me having a cup of coffee and working on a new crochet project, but when I'm not doing that, you might find me out at a local park rollerblading, baking some fresh cookies, picking veggies in the garden or re-decorating for a new season or holiday. My two cats are great supervisors for all my adventures (minus the being outside because they think it's too hot in Florida to be anywhere but inside), and make sure I take plenty of breaks.

I have a pair of these black canvas shoes, and they have become my new favorite! I love the ease of being able to slip them on real quick without needing to tie the laces, and pretty comfortable too! Wow, and 14 other prints available!

This cactus candle smells amazing! This coconut soy candle is from InspireLites on Etsy, and Baja Cactus Blossom is the scent – it’s sweet, and just so lovely!
