Thrift Store Thursday: Brown Hall Au Gratin Dish 27, On Rockwood Lane

In this week’s edition of Thrift Store Thursday, I’m sharing this brown and cream Hall 527 au gratin dish.

These au gratin dishes are perfect for individual size casseroles – really great if you have picky eaters that don’t like certain ingredients. It’s also an unexpected lovely dish for the kitchen sink sponge (that’s what I use one for), on the dining room table holding bread or as a trinket dish or candy dish – imagine over a crocheted oval doily!

This is a creamy white colored dish with a soft fan print on the handles where you would hold with your thumbs…

… with brown on the bottom on the sides and a creamy white colored bottom. It has “Hall Made in the USA 527” stamped on the bottom.

In my research, I’ve found vintage ones from the 1950’s to a “Welsh Rarebit Dish” that has the same look and number, but makes me think it’s a newer make. The dishes I have are not as bright in color, and the stamp on the bottom is worn, which makes me lean towards older, but could also just be that these were used quite a bit.

This dish holds 8 ounces, and is 8″ long by 4.13″ (4 1/8″) wide by 1.75″ (1 3/4″) deep.

If you are local to Central Florida, you can also find this piece and more in person at America’s Antique Mall in Melbourne. Ask for seller “elk”.

How to Price Your Hall Au Gratin Dish 527

My tag says “Hall Small Oval Au Gratin Dish”.

I found this dish ranges from $9 to $12. I took the average, and listed mine for $10.

Some Inspiration for an Au Gratin Dish

In my booth located at America’s Antique Mall in Melbourne, Florida, I use the au gratin dishes for display. They’re just perfect for sponges. My counter space where my sponge goes in my kitchen is not large enough or flat for an au gratin dish, but I love this idea for a sink! Or as a trinket dish on an entryway table or dresser.

These sponges were worked up for me by TandC Crafters. I have ordered many things from her as I can’t crochet as much as I used to, and I want to have crocheted items available in my booth. She is such a pleasure to work with, and her work is fantastic.

Here I have three stacked on top of each other for height.

Here I have it on my table in my booth with more sponges in it, but imagine it with spoons and forks laid in it for when guests come over for dinner.

Thank you! Not meant to be a dish sponge holder, but it works perfectly for it!

That is a fun idea to serve casseroles in individual size dishes: I will have to be on the lookout.
